The Places Most Trips Are Built Around
Marrakech
Landmarks & Souks
The Red City, and the loudest of the imperial cities. The souks are still grouped by trade, and the palaces are worth a morning. Jemaa el-Fna fills after sunset.
Fès
Medina & Heritage
A UNESCO-listed medina where no car can get in, so goods still move by handcart and mule and you walk the last stretch to the riad door. The tanneries are working sites rather than exhibits.
Atlas Mountains
Peaks & Trails
The range runs from Toubkal, under snow from November into May, down to the terraced Berber villages below it. You can take an afternoon's walk in it, or a week on the mule tracks.
Sahara Desert
Dunes & Adventure
Erg Chebbi is a long drive from anywhere, which is part of the point. Camel treks and a camp under the stars. Winter nights sit around freezing, and the better camps close from June to August.
Atlantic Coast
Beaches & Culture
Essaouira has the wind, the ramparts and the fishing fleet. Agadir has the beach and the hotels. Same coast, almost nothing in common.
