How the day runs
- 08:30 collection; south-east on the R203 with the Atlas filling the windscreen
- 09:40 into the valley: the argan cooperative, the river under the walnuts, a village already at work rather than performing
- 11:00 the upper valley by car, stopping where the water is loudest and the shade is deepest
- 12:40 up the track to Kasbah Bab Ourika — the last ten minutes are unpaved and taken in a four-wheel drive
- 13:00 lunch on the garden terrace; the menu is whatever came out of the kitchen garden that morning
- 15:30 the gardens and the viewpoint before you go
- 16:40 back at your riad
Why it works this way
This day is defined by what it removes. Standard Ourika itineraries run eight to ten hours because they include the Setti Fatma waterfall scramble — 45 to 60 minutes of wet, uneven rock — and then need a riverside tourist lunch to fill the rest. Take the scramble out and replace the riverside table with the kasbah, and the same valley becomes a 6h20 morning with a serious lunch at the end of it. The timing follows the traffic rather than the brochure: the valley is calm before eleven and a convoy after, worse on Sundays and worse again in Moroccan school holidays, so the driving and the stops are all front-loaded. Bab Ourika is a hotel kitchen, not a restaurant — no published service hours, so the table is reserved by email days ahead, and the approach genuinely needs the right vehicle.
Suits: Multigenerational families, guests who want mountains without walking, and anyone who needs shade, a proper table and no crowds. Party of up to six; the kasbah terrace takes twelve, so larger family groups can be seated together.
