How the day runs
- 08:00 collection; south through the Moulay Brahim gorge and up the R203
- 09:30 Imlil at 1,740 metres: mint tea, then you meet the mountain guide and the muleteer
- 10:00 out through the walnut terraces and the apple orchards, climbing gently towards Aroumd
- 11:30 the mules take the loads and anyone who wants to ride, rides; the pace is set by the slowest walker in the party and nobody is asked to keep up
- 13:00 a long lunch on a terrace with Toubkal in front of you
- 14:30 back down to the car
- 16:00 at your riad, with the whole evening still yours
Why it works this way
Five hours on site plus ninety minutes each way reconciles exactly to the eight hours operators advertise for this day — anything longer is padding and anything shorter is a different product. The departure is the differentiator: every operator leaves Marrakech at 09:00, which puts the climb out of Imlil between eleven and one, at altitude, in full sun. Leaving at 08:00 — and 07:30 from June to August — finishes the climbing before the sun is over the ridge. The 90-minute transfer cannot be trimmed whatever a listing claims: the R203 above Asni is slow hairpins and shaving it means driving them badly.
